As common structures seen across the United States, gas stations have occupied locations on main streets and suburban corners. They are characterized not only by architecture, but also by their function-servicing automobiles and providing fuel for their use. Throughout Sioux Falls, gas stations have ranged from one-room sheds to elaborate one-stop complexes.

Over time, gas stations design in the United States evolve with changes in cars, cities, and traffic. What was once a hardware store clerk filling a bucket of gas and bringing it to the car parked at the curb, soon became a small-structured station where one could purchase gasoline, oil, and other auto necessities.
