Program '70: An Urban Renewal Program for Sioux Falls

Urban Renewal Program for Sioux Falls 1970

Last month the Collection’s Department cataloged a large collection of booklets, magazines, and visitor guidebooks relating to Sioux Falls, dating from the 1960s to 1995. Among the items we cataloged from this collection were a fold out map and strategy plan for Urban Renewal of Sioux Falls dated 1970, a map of Sioux Falls Downtown Development project dated 1995, and a 1992 brochure for Sioux Falls College. These items may seem too recent to have in a history museum, and most people would likely throw them away if they found them, but to us they are important artifacts. All of these items reflect the changes and ideas of the time in which they were developed, and of course, they will not stay new forever. Currently the Siouxland Heritage Museums has very few photographs of Sioux Falls and very few brochures of local businesses from the 1950s to present day in the collection. We are always looking for donations of modern photographs and other more recent memorabilia with great stories. We firmly believe that just because an item was made yesterday does not necessarily mean that it will not be historically significant tomorrow.   Please contact the museum if you think you have any items that would be of interest to future generations.
