"George Catlin and the Old Frontier", Harold McCracken. (Bonanza Books, New York, 1959). Catlin was a long time admirer of the Indians and wanted to record their way of life before their cultures were destroyed by European civilization. In 1831 he traveled down the Missouri and stayed with the Mandans during the summer. His paintings provide an important record of these people as do his journals.
"People of the First Man: Life Among the Plains Indians in Their Final Days of Glory: The Firsthand Account of Prince Maximilian's Expedition Up the Missouri River" Text by Prince Maximilian zu Wied, Watercolors by Karl Bodmer, edited by Davis Thomas and Karin Ronnefeldt (Promontory Press, New York 1982). Maximilian traveled the Missouri in 1833 and stayed with the Mandans during the winter of 1833-4. He kept extensive journals that provide one of our most important records of these people. He was accompanied by Karl Bodmer a Swiss artist whose paintings provide a visual record of the people of the Missouri River and its landscape, now much of which is underwater.
