Upper Missouri Region

The doll mimics the new dress style of the early 1800’s which was the two-piece tail dress. It is dollcomplete with side-seam moccasins and leggings. The buckskin bodice is stuffed with bison wool. The doll’s hair is also of buffalo. Dolls did not have faces in the early days.

A girl would have a toy buckskin tipi to accompany the doll and would learn skills from play. The toy horses are bones from the buffalo’s foot and were dyed the various colors of horses. Girls would connect sticks to the bone horses to make a travois to move camp.
