WHO CAN ENTER?

Anyone of any age! If under the age of 18 Parental/Guardian permission must be granted.

WHAT TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHS ARE ELIGIBLE?

Both color and black and white images will be accepted. Digital images or an 8 x 10 print are acceptable. Developed print(s) or in CD/DVD format is also acceptable by mail or delivered.

 

Submissions must be high resolution in any of the following formats:
300 dpi at a minimum of 5 x 7 inches in .pdf or .jpg format, images should be at least 1,024k (1 MB) but less than 5,120k (5 MB)

 

Rename your file with your last name and first initial followed by the number of your submission. (For example, if John Smith had two photos to submit, the files would be named smithj1.pdf and smithj2.pdf)

 

WHAT TYPES OF VIDEO ARE ELIGIBLE?

Both 16:9 and 4:3 ratios will be accepted. CD/DVD is also acceptable by mail or delivered.

 

Submissions must not exceed 5 minutes in length and be in any of the following formats:
.avi, .mp4, or a DVD mailed in or brought to the Old Courthouse Museum.

 

Rename your file with your last name and first initial followed by the number of your submission. (For example, if John Smith had two videos to submit, the files would be named smithj1.avi and smithj2.avi)

 

WHAT MUST BE SUBMITTED?

Each entry is comprised of media and a story. If photographic, the accompanying story should be in text form. If video, the story can be voiced into the presentation. Keep word count at 500 max.

 

Text should be in a Word (.doc) or text file (.txt) format, and the file name should reflect which photo the text supports. Word file name examples, following the above scenario:
smithj1text.doc and smithj2text.doc

 

Submitting images that clearly identify a person will need to have a model release submitted with the entry or the submission will be disqualified.

HOW DO I SUBMIT?

Submissions can be submitted via this website; or brought or mailed to the Old Courthouse Museum, 200 W. 6th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57104

 

ARE ONLY DIGITAL IMAGES ELIGIBLE?

DOES MY PHOTOGRAPH NEED TO BE FRAMED?

No.

 

MUST THE WORK BE SUBMITTED BY THE ENTRANT(S)?

Yes. By entering the "Meaningful Places" contest, the entrant(s) represents, acknowledges and warrants that the submitted work is an original, created solely by the entrant(s), and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the piece.

 

IS THERE AN ENTRY FEE?

No.

 

WHAT SUBJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

All submissions must be of a location that is important to you. Focus on what you think should be preserved.

 

MUST ALL PHOTOS OR VIDEO BE TAKEN IN SIOUX FALLS?

No. Images must be taken within or feature a place within a 40 mile radius of Sioux Falls.

 

WILL I NEED A MODEL RELEASE?

Perhaps. Does your piece feature a person? If so, you need a signed release from EACH identifiable subject in the work. Releases that cannot be verified for authenticity by the Siouxland Heritage Museum, for any reason (including missing, incorrect or incomplete contact information on the release form) will result in the disqualification of the entry.

HOW WILL THE IMAGES BE JUDGED?

Entries will be judged on the story accompanying the work as well as the photo or video. We want to show the rich history of our community, from many people’s perspectives. Be creative, be modern, be exciting!

 

WHO WILL BE JUDGING THE IMAGES?

The images will be judged by staff and volunteers from the Siouxland Heritage Museums. All decisions by the judges are final.

 

DO I NEED TO SUBMIT AN ENTRY FORM?

Yes. You must complete an entry form for all work submitted.

 

CAN I ENTER MORE THAN ONE PIECE?

Yes. Up to five(5) photos and/or videos may be submitted by a single individual.

 

CAN A GROUP ENTER A SUBMISSION?

Yes! Collaborate with your friends. Make sure only one person submits your final piece.

 

WHAT RIGHTS WILL THE SIOUXLAND HERITAGE MUSEUM RETAIN?

By submitting you irrevocably and unconditionally give, transfer, and assign to the SIOUXLAND HERITAGE MUSEUMS all rights, title, and interests, including all copyrights, trademarks, and related interests, in and to the following described property subject only to the following conditions:

 

            Submissions become the property of the Siouxland Heritage Museums. The entrant(s) warrants that he/she is the legal owner of the original media and the submission is unencumbered. All submissions are considered outright and unconditional gifts to be used at the Siouxland Heritage Museums' discretion.  

Why do we ask for this?

 

RETURNS

No entry will be returned, and all entries become the property of the Siouxland Heritage Museums. They will be added to the permanent Siouxland Heritage Museums’ collection, will be owned and maintained by the organization, and will be used as the organization sees fit. It must be understood that the Siouxland Heritage Museums shares images with media, individuals, and other organizations, and credit will be given to the Siouxland Heritage Museums.

 

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Submissions selected by the judges will be featured in the “Meaningful Places” exhibit at the Old Courthouse Museum this fall. Prizes will be given to the top picks.

 

WHAT IS THE GENERAL AGREEMENT?

Contest entrants agree to abide by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of the judging organization, which are final on all matters pertaining to the contest.

 

DISCLAIMER

The Siouxland Heritage Museums is not responsible for entries not received due to lost, failed, delayed, or interrupted connections or miscommunications, or other electronic malfunctions. The sponsor is not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate entry information, whether caused by persons entered at the website or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the contest, or by any human error, which may occur in the processing of the entries in this contest.

 

By entering, participants release and hold harmless the Siouxland Heritage Museums, as well as any directors, officers or employees of those organizations from any and all liability for any injuries, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the contest.

If, for any reason, the contest is not capable of being conducted as planned, including any causes beyond the control of the administrators, the Siouxland Heritage Museums reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to cancel, modify, suspend, or terminate the contest without notice to the entrants.

 

Entry into the photography contest does not create any vested right or interest for the participants in the prizes offered for the contest.
