Tour the elegant 1889 Queen Anne style home of South Dakota's first senator, R.F. Pettigrew. Take a guided tour of the historic home, or browse through the museum galleries and discover the Sioux Falls of yesterday. Students can learn about family and social life in the late 1800s and explore the differences and similarities to modern times.

 

Museum Exhibits

The museum galleries introduce visitors to R.F. Pettigrew and Sioux Falls in the late 1800s to 1920. The galleries include an eleven minute introductory video, interactive computer stations, pull-out drawers, lots of fascinating artifacts and photos to explore and read about.

The Pettigrew Home & Museum has been featured in Smithsonian Institution and National Geographic publications. Its detailed woodwork, silk damask wall coverings, jeweled glass windows, and authentic furnishings provide a peek into the life of a turn of the century political family.

 

Be our guest on a guided tour of the historic Pettigrew home. Tours last approximately 30 minutes each and are led by our friendly staff of trained tour guides.

 

  • We can accommodate up to 10 visitors per tour with one adult per 10 students.
  • Please allow an hour or more (depending on group size) to tour the home and view the galleries.
  • Schedule early for the best times! We recommend calling (605) 367-7097 at least two weeks in advance to make reservations for groups larger than five.
  • We have reserved the mornings between October and April just for school Groups! The home is closed to the general public at this time.
  • We also offer a self-guided tour around the outside of the Pettigrew Home and Museum. Take advantage of a nice day to enjoy this unique tour!
