Learn about art of Native cultures.

Learn about history and make your own crafts to take home! Call to register in advance. Kids Activity Day is free. Children will be given the opportunity to make a craft while learning about history.  The program has two sessions; the morning session is from 9 to 11 a.m., afternoon sessions from 1-2:00 p.m., and creative learning programs run every 15 minutes throughout the sessions.

Nationally touring, award winning songwriter Julie Patchouli and master guitarist Bruce Hecksel light up the air with sparkling acoustic sounds and their powerful contagious chemistry. Famous for that smiling voice that instantly turns a bad day into a good one, Patchouli’s down-to-earth, hopeful songwriting is “New American Folk” blending elements of folk, pop, flamenco and jazz with world beat rhythms. Patchouli’s sound has been described as “the harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel meet the guitar brilliance of the Gipsy Kings.

JAS Quintet is one of South Dakota’s premier jazz ensembles. Formed in 2012 and based in Sioux Falls the ensemble continues to perform concert and festival dates throughout the region. JAS features the classic jazz quintet instrumentation of trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass and drums. Their repertoire is a diverse mix of old and new, featuring many original arrangements by members of the band. Concerts include favorites from Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and contemporary artists. You are sure to hear many familiar tunes during a JAS concert along with a few new jazz classics. The members of the JAS Quintet are recognized as some of the finest jazz musicians and educators in the region. Touring extensively throughout South Dakota, JAS Quintet has established a reputation as one of the top jazz ensembles in the region.

JAS Quintet features Jimmy Speirs (trumpet), Joel Shotwell (saxophone), Jeff Paul (piano), Andrew Reinartz (bass), and Daniel Heier (drums).

Tickets on Sale for SHM Alliance Members for Woodlawn by Lantern Tours $10 at the Old Courthouse Museum.

Voices from the Past: Woodlawn

See Woodlawn Cemetery as you have never seen it before on a lantern light tour into Sioux Falls’ history! During your tour you will meet some of the most interesting characters of Sioux Falls’ past as local actors bring their colorful stories to life. Learn about a prominent banking family, a former soldier, members of the printing industry, and an escape from the penitentiary!

The tour will take place on the paved paths inside Woodlawn Cemetery, last about 50-60 minutes, and cover between half and three-quarters of a mile. The tour will go forward in nearly any weather, so please plan to dress appropriately for late October at night.

The tours will take place on October 22nd, 23rd and 24th, with starting times at 6:30, 6:50, 7:10, 7:30, and 7:50 p.m. on Thursday, and an additional 8:10 p.m. tour on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $10 and will go on sale at the Old Courthouse Museum on Sept. 5th for Museums Alliance members and Sept. 12th for the general public. A limited number of tickets will be available for each tour. Recommended for ages 12 and up. Call (605) 367-4210 to purchase your tickets.
